Entry at 11+ into Year 7 (for September 2020)
The Governors of the School are prepared to accept boys into Year 7 up to a Published Admission Number (PAN) of 120. Admission at 11+ is in the September following the academic year in which the boy attains the age of 11 (for entry in September 2020, his date of birth will fall on or between 1 September 2008 and 31 August 2009). Applications from boys out of chronological age group will be considered at the discretion of the Governing Body. Assessment for entry into the School is arranged using the Local Authority selection scheme.
The closing date for requests for selection testing is 28 June 2019.

How to apply (for admission in September 2020)
Boys whose homes lie within and who attend schools within the catchment area (defined in Appendix A) will be automatically entered into the Local Authority selection scheme unless parents choose to withdraw their child from the process.
Boys living outside the catchment area (defined in appendix A) as well as those who live in the catchment area but who attend schools outside it may also be entered for the Local Authority selection scheme. In such cases, applications for a place at Ermysted’s Grammar School should be made to the Harrogate Education Office, Jesmond House, 31-33 Victoria Avenue, Harrogate, HG1 5QB (telephone 01609 533679) either in writing or on-line at www.northyorks.gov.uk/selective-schools. However, depending on the time of the application, testing may not be possible until after the date of allocation of school places.
The required academic standard for entry into Ermysted’s is determined by the Local Authority selection scheme, which uses the GL Assessment tests to define the standard as that achieved by the highest scoring 28% of all Year 6 boys who live within the catchment area (defined in Appendix A).
Parents should be aware that not all boys who reach the required academic standard can be accommodated at the School, taking into account the maximum admission limit of 120.
Should there be more boys who reach the required academic standard than can be accommodated, after the admission of boys who have undergone statutory assessment and for whom a final statement of special educational needs (SEN) has been issued which specifically names Ermysted’s Grammar School, priority will be given using the following over-subscription criteria:
- first to boys who are looked after, or have been previously looked after, by the Local Authority, including those who are in the care of another local authority, for whom the school has been expressed as a preference
- second to boys whose homes lie within the catchment area (defined in Appendix A)
- third to boys whose homes lie outside the catchment area (defined in Appendix A)
Preference to boys in the second and third priority will be applied in the following order:
a. to boys who have a brother at the School (brothers include step-brothers living at the same address).
b. to boys who live closest to the School. Distance will be measured in a straight line from their home postcode to the postcode of the School using an electronic mapping system.
The catchment area refers to the area served by the primary schools in Beamsley, Bradley, Burnsall, Carleton, Cracoe, Embsay, Gargrave, Grassington, Kettlewell, Kirkby-in-Malhamdale, Skipton, Thornton-in-Craven and Threshfield. How places are offered
If a parent/carer has expressed a preference for Ermysted’s Grammar School on the Common Application Form, the Governors will consider whether they can offer their child a place. If necessary, they will apply the over-subscription criteria detailed above to produce a list identifying which pupils can be offered places and which of the over-subscription criteria applies.
Having received this information from the School, the Local Authority will try to meet parents/carers’ highest ranked preference as stated on their Common Application Form.
